In Alaska, dental assistant training is not required but strongly encouraged. The scope of functions of a dental assistant in Alaska depends on the type of required training and/or certification. One does not have to be a certified dental assistant (CDA) or a registered dental assistant in Alaska to obtain a dental assistant job in this state. There are simple basic supportive procedures that may be performed by a dental assistant. These procedures are specified by the Alaska Dental Practice Act. There is no special training or educational requirements for this type of dental assisting. Also, there are no special radiological requirements for Alaskan dental assistants. If the dental assistant is to perform coronal polishing procedures under supervision by the dentist, then a certificate is required.

An approved instruction program by the Alaska Board of Dental Examiners is to be completed for certification.
