Alaska Medical Technologist Programs and Continuing Education

Students looking for on-site campuses that offer degree programs in Alaska may be limited to Anchorage where students can earn either a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, or an Associate of Applied Science degree in Medical Laboratory Technology at a state university. However, thanks to available online and distance learning programs, students can widen their options by enrolling in these programs which may lead to such degrees as: Bachelor in Healthcare Studies-Medical Technology, Master of Health Science in Medical Laboratory Science, Associate in Medical Laboratory Technology and Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. Some examples of 3-4 credit courses found in these programs include: Pharmacology, Molecular Pathology, Neurophysiology, Immunology, Emerging Diagnostics and Hematology.

Upon graduating from a selected program, many students decide to acquire medical technologist certification in Alaska. As mentioned, certification is not necessary but employers definitely prefer it because it proves occupational competence. To gain certification, students will need to enroll in programs that are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, the Accrediting Bureau (CAAHEP), the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) or the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS). The four nationally recognized certification agencies in the United States for medical technologists are American Medical Technologies, the Board of Registry of the American Society for Clinical Pathology, the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel and the Board of Registry of the American Association of Bioanalysts.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Medical Technologists in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau and Sitka, Alaska may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including Providence Alaska Medical Center, Fairbanks Memorial Hospital, Alaska Regional Hospital, and Central Peninsula Regional Hospital.
