Even though there are currently no Alaska nursing informatics programs, there are many “online” healthcare informatics masters degree programs that an Alaskan resident can access to receive a higher education. For example, one online program consists of a Master of Science nursing degree program with a nursing informatics specialization. The program consists of three phases. Phase I includes five nursing core courses and one graduate elective. All of thesse courses are delivered online. Phase II entails three nursing informatics courses. Lastly, Phase III includes an experience in informatics project management, along with an online seminar. This is the highpoint of the program because the student is able to apply knowledge and comprehension to a “real life” information technology situation in a simulated healthcare setting. Another online masters program in nursing informatics has a full-time schedule of study, as well as a part-time area of study to fit the need of the student. An online education is huge benefit for an individual living in Alaska that needs the flexibility and convenience.
