In preparing for a career as a radiology technician, while in secondary school your studies should have emphasized mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology in high school.  But you can’t get to become a radiology technician without doing post-secondary studies and obtaining an associate degree or even a bachelor’s degree.

When looking for a formal post-secondary training program for radiology technician, look for a program that is accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.  The Committee (www.jrcert.org) has accredited 397 programs, which offer an associate degree, and 35 programs which bachelor’s degree.  As the governing body that sets standards for curriculum in radiologic technology programs, the Committee suggests programs have courses in Clinical Practice and Patient Management, general courses in computer fundamentals, computer components and operations, patient care, anatomy and physiology, ethics in radiologic science, imaging science, as well as principles in magnetic resonance.  Additionally, the federal government, in an effort to protect the public from harmful levels of radiation, has established standards that states can adopt in order to certify training programs for radiology technicians and make sure radiologist receive the right type of training.  You'll find most accredited programs in Alaska in Anchorage, the most populated city. However, there are still not a great deal of Alaska radiology technician schools. Online options are great for Alaska residents.
