How to Become a Gerontologist in Arkansas - AR

Gerontology is a wide-open, diverse, and exciting career field, and your first step to breaking into in Arkansas is to decide what sort of career you want, and then attend the appropriate program.

Gerontology programs in Arkansas range from several month certification programs, to educational curriculums resulting in master and doctoral degrees. As such, figuring out what level of education you need to get where you want to go in Arkansas, is a big part of your planning. Those already trained in another Allied Health Field will probably just need a one or two year certification program, well those hoping to be gerontology professionals, like Social Workers, Counselors, and Geriatric Nurses, may need anywhere from four to six years for their education.

When looking at schools, consider attending one approved of by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education. The Arkansas medical board is not very strictly regulatory of gerontologists, so this isn’t a necessary step, but it will ensure you go to a school recognized by boards all over the country, and you enroll in a program held to strict academic standards.

Likewise, the certification bestowed by the Gerontological Society of America isn’t necessary, but could be that extra edge in your resume you need to get the job you want, as well as connecting you to your peers in Alabama and across the country, and keeping you up-to-date on the latest developments in your field.

When you’ve graduated, you may or may not have to apply for licensure and test for accreditation. Most gerontologists in Arkansas aren’t required to do either, by many allied health professionals who chose to specialize in gerontology will still have to fulfill their professions requirements for licensure and accreditation.
