Education Required for Arkansas Massage Therapists
While reasonable to assume that graduating from an Arkansas massage school with a national accreditation (e.g., the Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation) and passing a national certification examination such as the National Certification Exam for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork will be sufficient for Arkansas licensure, it is strongly recommended you check with your school and the ASBMT to ensure the latter’s very specific requirements are met.
Coursework must be completed in the following categories:
Areas of Study |
Classroom Hours Required |
Physiology, anatomy, pathology, contraindications |
175 |
Massage therapy techniques |
225 |
Electrotherapy, heliotherapy, hydrotherapy |
25 |
Infection control / hygiene |
25 |
Ethics, massage therapy law, business management |
25 |
Related subjects (ASBMT-approved) |
25 |
Additionally, the Arkansas massage school program must:
- Furnish all students copies of: a) the Arkansas Massage Therapy Act, and b) ASBMT Rules and Regulations
- Provide three clock hours (minimum) education in HIV/AIDS and other communicable diseases
- Require CPR training and provide proof of this instruction at the time of student graduation
- Limit study in polarity, reiki or similar subjects to five percent of the total 500-hour curriculum
