In Arizona, dentists are licensed professionals, thus requiring them to complete a pre-graduation, intern-based apprenticeship program. During this time, students are actually placed in a general dental or surgical facility where they perform under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist, giving them the ability to apply their knowledge of dentistry in a real-world application. Depending on whether your career path is toward general dentistry or surgical dentistry, training will consist of performing:

  • Tooth extractions
  • Filling cavities
  • Dental cleaning
  • Teeth whitening
  • Administration of local and/or general anesthesia
  • Reading dental x-rays

Once you have graduated and completed this training program, the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners, which is the licensing board for dentists in Arizona, requires you to take and pass the following examinations:

  • National Dental Board examination (Part I and II)
  • Western Regional Examining Board examination
  • Arizona Dental Jurisprudence Examination
