Health teachers are necessary in New York’s school system, public health system and beyond. There are a variety of health educator careers in New York for those interested in pursuing them, provided that you have the correct training for the career in which you wish to participate. Certification is usually necessary in order to be an elementary or secondary health teacher in New York. Alternatively, health educator certification is also available for all health educators through the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. Passing this organization’s examination will give you the credentials of Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES).
For those who plan to pursue health education in New York’s public school system, certification takes a different track. After you graduate from an accredited teacher preparation program in the state, you must pass certain examinations including the New York State Liberal Arts and Sciences Test (LAST), the Assessment of Teaching Skills- Written (ATS-W), and the appropriate Content Specialty Test (CST) for Health Educators. New York has provisions for those with bachelor degrees other than in education, and will provide teacher preparation education in order for these individuals to become qualified to teach in New York.
