How to Become an Ultrasound Tech in Illinois – IL

Illinois has a strong market trend in the arena of diagnostic medical sonography.  Salary, placement opportunities, along with population growth make Illinois a great place to pursue a career in this exciting profession.

The state of Illinois does not license the field of diagnostic medical sonography.  However, there are certain steps one must take to become an ultrasound technician in Illinois and obtain the registered diagnostic medical sonographer (RDMS) credential.  First, you must determine your prerequisite path in order to take the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) examinations.  A checklist is available on the ARDMS website.  The path consists of education, clinical ultrasound/vascular experience, along with proper documentation.  As stated earlier, if you graduate from an accredited program, then you do not need to have additional clinical experience versus if you graduated from a non-accredited program, then an additional 12 months of clinical experience is required.  At this point, you can complete the online application and submit the application fee, which is currently $200.  Lastly, you can schedule to take the required examinations.  The main examination is the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination.  Also, one must pass a specialty examination within the RDMS credential.  Upon successfully passing the examinations, you are awarded the RDMS credential and qualified to market yourself using this credential.
