How to Become an Ultrasound Tech in Minnesota – MN

Minnesota is an excellent place to pursue a career as a diagnostic medical sonographer.  The state is home to Mayo Clinic in Rochester.  The hospital is part of the largest combined medical centers in the world.  Being a diagnostic medical sonographer on a team that focuses on patient care, medical development, and research would be challenging, but the rewards are endless.  

The following are the steps of how to become an ultrasound technician in Minnesota.

As of this date, the state of Minnesota does not register or license the occupation of diagnostic medical sonographer.  On the other hand, in order to be a “step ahead” in the industry, one should graduate from an accredited college.  Moreover, employers look at candidates with professional credentials, such as the registered diagnostic medical sonographer (RDMS) credential.  This symbolizes dedication and commitment of the individual.  As stated above, this is administered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).  The following steps are a summary of obtaining this voluntary credential as an ultrasound technician in Minnesota.

  • Check the ARDMS website for the prerequisite path reference guide.  Determine which education/clinical path applies to your situation.
  • Comply with all required documentation, such as transcripts or letters written in a formal format.
  • Once this has been completed, submit the online application.
  • Pay the appropriate application fee, which is currently $200.
  • Prepare for and successfully pass the two required examinations – the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination and one specialty examination within the RDMS credential.  Practice examinations are available on the ARDMS website. 
  • At this point, you will receive an identification card be able to use the appropriate credentials.
