Becoming a Lactation Consultant in Indiana – IN

After gaining education and training, the next major step in developing a successful career is for health care professionals and students to achieve lactation consultant certification in Indiana. Although certification is not mandatory in Indiana, it is strongly encouraged. Individuals that get certified are given the professional title of international board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC). The International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) grants certification to those individuals that successfully pass a lactation consultant competency examination.


However, in order to qualify to sit for examination by the IBLCE, eligibility requirements must be meet via one of three pathways. Depending on which pathway is selected, lactation consultants in Indiana may have to complete: base education in health care disciplines, prior work experience as a health care professional or a breastfeeding counselor, an accredited academic program in human lactation and breastfeeding, a supervised human lactation education plan pre-approved by the IBLCE, between 300 and 1,000 hours of documented clinical practice in lactation, and between 45 to 90 hours of education that directly instructs in human lactation and breastfeeding.

Once certified, lactation consultants in Indiana will need to complete 75 hours of continuing education relating to aspects of lactation consulting or retake the certification exam every five years. The IBLCE insists that lactation consultants renew certification to ensure that professionals stay current with industry advancements, changing trends, and progressive techniques.
