Becoming a Lactation Consultant in New Jersey – NJ

Becoming a certified lactation consultant in New Jersey can be accomplished by meeting the requirements set by the International Board of Lactation Consultants Examiners (IBCLE). If you complete an IBCLE accredited program you will be awarded the designation of International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).

The steps to becoming a lactation consultant are largely dependent on the career path you choose. If, for instance, you are going to become a registered nurse, many of the classes the IBCLE demands you take may likely already be included in your degree program.

If your goal is only an IBCLC certification the steps you take will be as follows: first work on the 300 hours of practical supervised clinic time you need to log. Next, sign up for and take all of the 14 classes at a nearby college, university, or an online school that offers qualified courses. The final step is to complete 90 hours of face-to-face supervised training working with mothers-to-be. Upon completion of the clinic time and college courses, signing up for and taking the board exam is the final step to your lactation consultant certification in New Jersey.
