Becoming a Lactation Consultant in New York – NY
Lactation consultant certification in New York requires practitioners to complete the necessary coursework and clinical hours and then pass the certification exam administered by the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultant Examiners. This certification verifies that the lactation consultant has specialized knowledge and skill regarding human lactation and the breastfeeding process. This would include an understanding of newborn and child developmental problems that breastfeeding mothers may encounter, as well as the health benefits that breastfeeding affords both the child and mother.
Certified lactation consultants in New York can become members of the New York Lactation Consultant Association (NYCLA; www.nylca.org), which allows them to network with other consultants, provides information about continuing education classes, and serves as a resource for mothers and families interested in the expert services a lactation consultant provides.
Lactation consultants are required to keep their skills and knowledge of the profession current. They must recertify every five years by taking continuing education courses, attending conferences, and/or taking advantage of approved online webinars. They must recertify by examination every ten years.
Because lactation consultants are part of the larger health care team, it is beneficial for them to obtain practical experience or other education through hospitals. Teaching hospitals such as the New York Presbyterian Hospital Systems in New York City (five locations), Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan, and Brookdale University Hospital in Brooklyn are examples of good places to investigate the possibility of internships, clinical practice hours, or employment as a lactation consultant.
