Becoming a Midwife in Arizona – AZ

Parents in Arizona often choose a midwife during pregnancy because the cost of delivery and care is greatly reduced. There is also an expert attending the birth who can help if there are complications, and midwives practice low intervention techniques. Arizona, offers two legal routes by which a midwife can become qualified to assist during childbirth. The first is as a certified nurse/midwife, and the second is as a licensed midwife.

Currently there isn’t any one “state approved” educational program the state recognizes for becoming a midwife in Arizona. Arizona does have licensing requirements, however. The Office of Special Licensure, of the Arizona Department of Health Services, will award a license based on passing an exam for midwives. The exam itself has certain criteria that you will need to meet in order to take the test.

To become a midwife in Arizona acting as a Certified Nurse/Midwife, you would need to graduate from a qualified nursing program and pass an exam administered by the by the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). The Arizona State Board of Nursing (ASBN) in Phoenix is a good resource for certification procedures.
