Becoming a Midwife in Missouri – MO

Becoming a midwife in Missouri means becoming a part of one of the most valuable professions; one that is growing exponentially. Most occupations see about a 9% growth increase over a 10-year period. However, midwifery is growing three times as fast. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for midwifes in Missouri to increase by at least 21% by the year 2018.  This will, without a doubt, give new midwifes a chance to secure employment in any facility of their choice.

One of the most common misconceptions about midwifery is that professionals in this field only deal with maternity care and the labor and delivery of a child. Yet, midwives deal with a host of issues, including emergency contraception, genetic counseling, childhood vaccinations, gynecological annuals, and breastfeeding support.

Between 1990 and 2004, the number of at-home births remained steady at around 1%, which is significantly higher than most other states. However, this is something that midwives in Missouri are working hard to increase. One county in particular, Webster County, has a 20% rate for at-home births. Not only is this is an astoundingly good indicator of job growth, it is also a model for other counties in Missouri.
