Becoming a Midwife in New Mexico – NM

Becoming a midwife in New Mexico generally entails getting the proper educational and professional training, filing an application for certification with the New Mexico, and taking a national certification examination.  To become certified as a Certified Nurse-Midwife in New Mexico, a candidate must be licensed as a nurse by the New Mexico Board of Nursing and have a current certification credential from the American College of Nurse-Midwives.  Certification as a nurse-midwife by the American College of Nurse-Midwives requires graduation from a nurse-midwifery program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education and passage of a certification examination given by the American Midwifery Certification Board.


To become a licensed midwife in New Mexico, an applicant must have complete basic educational requirements in midwifery at an accredited midwifery education program and take the American Midwifery Certification Board examination.  They must also provide evidence of training and current certification in CPR and intravenous therapy, as well as of certification by the Neonatal Resuscitation Program of the American Academy of Pediatrics.  Alternately, a candidate for licensure as a midwife in New Mexico may present proof of certification as a Certified Professional Midwife and pass an abbreviated examination administered by the state’s Division of Public Health.  Becoming a Certified Professional Midwife entails taking one of the following professional routes: 1) graduating from a midwifery program accredited by the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council; 2) becoming certified as a nurse-midwife or midwife by the American College of Nurse-Midwives Certification Council; or 3) completing the Portfolio Evaluation Process established by the North American Registry of Midwives, which provides individualized evaluation of each candidate’s competency to practice as a midwife based on education, apprenticeships, and demonstration of practical knowledge and skills.
