Becoming a Midwife in North Dakota – ND

Becoming a midwife in North Dakota requires the proper educational background and certification. Once students have completed their studies, they can take the national board exam administered by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB). In addition, recertification is necessary by completing the requirements of the Certification Maintenance Program (CMP), which include completing three self-learning modules regarding the practice of midwifery and 20 hours of continuing education units every five years.

The demand for midwifery services in North Dakota is predicted to increase over the next several years. One reason for this increase is the fact that certified nurse-midwives (CNM) are able to provide care and treatment at a lower cost than an obstetrician or gynecologist. Many OB-GYN offices offer the services of a nurse-midwife in order to lighten the caseload on physicians, especially in circumstances of uncomplicated pregnancies or routine women’s health exams. The North Dakota State Health Task Force reinforces this practice by recommending the increased employment of certified nurse-midwives as well as other mid-level practitioners such as physician’s assistants and certified nurse practitioners.

North Dakota state law requires that certified nurse-midwives be recognized as primary care providers by the state Medicaid program, which affords them the same rights, such as prescription-writing privileges and hospital admittance, and responsibilities that primary care physicians have.
