Becoming a midwife in Virginia begins with preliminary training and national certification. Although these are specific requirements for midwifery licensure in Virginia, they are also paramount to both developing skill and becoming prepared to work as a midwife.


Training to become a midwife in Virginia generally begins during the last year of your master’s program. During this clinical preceptorship, the Virginia Board of Medicine states that students must participate in a certain amount of clinical experiences, including 10 preconception visits, 40 newborn assessment exams, 40 live births, 30 gynecologic care visits, 170 antepartum exams, and at least 10 lactation consultation visits, for a total of approximately 1350 supervised hours of clinical training.

With appropriate training, nurse-midwives in Virginia are prepared to become certified and licensed. Certification works by passing the North American Registry of Midwives’ (NARM) examination to become a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM). The Virginia Board of Medicine then also requires current neonatal resuscitation certification as well.

The midwife licensure fee in Virginia is $312, and this license must be renewed every 2 years. With this license, midwifes in Virginia can work in numerous settings that support the services of midwife professionals, such as Lynchburg General Hospital, University of Virginia Medical Center, or Inova Fairfax Hospital.
