Biomedical Equipment Technician Training in Texas – TX

BMET certification in Texas is available through the International Certification Commission for Clinical Engineering and Biomedical Technology (ICC), which works collaboratively with the Board of Examiners for Biomedical Equipment Technicians.  The Board offers an examination to assess the depth of individuals’ knowledge of the field so they may be verified as highly skilled professionals whose acumen enables them to practice in the most respected of medical and health-oriented settings.

The certification test is comprised of 150 multiple choice questions in areas such as physiology, occupational safety, electronics and equipment problem-solving.  To pass, test takers must correctly answer at least 105 questions.  Those who earn certification will be recognized as one of three types of practitioners:

  1. Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET);
  2. Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES); or
  3. Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES).

To qualify for the exam, individuals must have a either combined academic and professional experience or at least four years of full-time employment in the field.  Once they earn certification, they maintain this distinction for three years, after which recertification is necessary.  To qualify for recertification, BMETs must have engaged in at least 15 hours of continuing education, which can include conferences and workshops.
