Become a Vet Tech in British Columbia



In order to become a vet tech in British Columbia, you will need to choose a veterinary technician school that offers the Animal Health Technology program. The program generally includes 21 courses spaced out over a 2-year period, with weekly dedicated hours focusing on veterinary laboratory and clinic/hospital practice.


The AHT program has gained the respect of veterinary professionals throughout British Columbia because of the comprehensive curriculum that it offers, with courses in:

  • Veterinary Behavior and Nutrition
  • Veterinary Care I, II, and III
  • Immunology and Veterinary Diseases
  • Veterinary Radiology I and II
  • Veterinary Surgical Assistance
  • Veterinary Dentistry
  • Pharmacology and Anesthesia

British Columbia vet tech programs generally prefer to admit students that have completed at least 1 prerequisite science course, such as biology, geology, chemistry, or physics; a mathematics course in either principles or algebra; and an English or communications course. The program also requires students to have completed at least 80 hours of volunteer work at a veterinary clinic or animal hospital in British Columbia. Students entering the vet tech program in British Columbia are also mandated to demonstrate good health by passing a physician health assessment and having a current rabies immunization.
