For those with a preference for warm weather, scenic beaches, ancient redwoods and some of the best wine made in the United States, California may be the location of choice for living and working. Residents of California and those who’d like to move there will find numerous job opportunities in healthcare in hospitals, home health care, nursing homes and other elder care facilities. The demand for certified nurse assistants in the state is particularly high, according to California economists.

Education/Degrees/Coursework

Certification as a nurse assistant in California requires a 150-hour course at a community college, vocational school or adult school, as well as continuing education units (CEUs) that may be provided by the facility at which a CNA is employed.

Many CNA programs at California community colleges prepare students to give basic nursing care as Certified Nursing Assistants. California CNA training programs require graduates to have completed six credit hours of a certified nursing assistant course. Students may also take additional classes to earn skills competency awards in the Acute Care CNA and Home Health Aide programs. Students must be CPR-certified before entering the Certified Nursing Assistant program. Graduates who complete this program may sit for the California State Certification Examination and may work as Certified Nursing Assistants throughout the state upon passage.

Students in a Certified Nurse Assistant program in California generally participate in both classroom and laboratory instruction and learn about the role of the health caregiver. Courses include basic care giving skills, adult needs in illness, healthcare safety, adult needs in illness and heath care and the healthcare environment. Some of the technical standards CNA students must master prior to certification include being able to lift a minimum of 30 pounds several times an hour, manipulating medical equipment and demonstrating sufficient written and verbal skills to communicate with the patient healthcare team.

Through either online or campus based programs, aspiring C.N.A.s in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco, California may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Paton State Hospital, L.A. County & USC Medical Center, Napa State Hospital and Sonoma Developmental Center.
