How to Become a Gerontologist in California - CA

California is the largest state in the United States by population. This state has the most well known cities in the world and is an epicenter for innovation.  Along with a large population there is guaranteed to be a large group of older Americans living among the citizens of California. Specialized health professionals that work with and in the interest of America’s older are gerontology specialists. Gerontology is a study of the mental, physical and sociological affects on aging. Gerontologists are part of a the Social and Human services class of employee according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, having a special interest in the elderly and aging. You can work in a career specialized to older adults after being educated in gerontology, or you can even help to shape legislation in regard to the aging population of the United States.

There are many paths you can take to work in gerontology within California.  An undergraduate degree will allow you to work in an entry level position working with older adults in facilities such as nursing homes and senior day care centers.  Many individuals can benefit from earning a bachelor's degree in gerontology, such as geriatric nurses whose primary concern is to work with the elderly.  If you pursue an advanced degree such as a Master's or a PhD in gerontology you can also work as a physician improving the health and quality of life for senior citizens in California.
