As a certified medical assistant (CMA) or registered medical assistant (RMA) you are expected to complete continuing education in order to remain in good standing with your certification. The medical assistant training and continuing education requirements in California include 60 educational units, focusing in the three primary CMA categories: administration, clerical and technical support. The continuing education units (CEUs) can be completed over a period of 5 years. If you have not completed the necessary continuing education you will then need to sit for a re-certification exam with California’s certifying authority. Continuing to stay current in your certification is important as your employer can periodically check with the American Association of Medical Assistants to see whether your certification is in good standing or has lapsed.

Not only is it important to meet your continuing education requirements for the purpose of your certification and continued employment, but it is also helpful in staying current on trends and issues within your field. As laws are written or changed that pertain to the medical field, anything that changes about your scope of practice is always important to know.

Through campus based and online programs, aspiring medical assistants in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco, California may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including Laguna Honda Hospital, Community Regional Medical Center, L.A. County & USC Medical Center, and Huntington Hospital.
