Find the right school for you
A medical office management degree can be obtained through several avenues in the state of California. There are many colleges and universities that offer the necessary coursework. Classes in general business management such as accounting, computer technology, communication, human relations, and administrative management provide a solid foundation for the business aspect of running a medical office. In addition, courses in health information management, financial management for healthcare facilities, medical insurance coding and billing, medical terminology, and even anatomy and physiology will ensure that the medical office manager understands the needs and issues that arise in a healthcare setting. The more education you have in business and medical matters, the more attractive you will be to a medical facility in search of an office manager.
Another form of training, which can be part of a degree program, is the internship or on-the-job training. Larger healthcare facilities may have several levels of managers—learning first-hand what the position entails and then working under the guidance of a supervisor is an excellent way to get experience. Many of California’s larger hospitals such as L.A. County and USC Medical Center in Los Angeles, Laguna Honda Hospital in San Francisco, and Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, may have internship opportunities for entry-level managerial positions. Once you have some managerial experience, it is easier to transition to a medical office position if that is your desire.
