Nuclear Medicine Technologist Education in California
The range for education requirements varies for this career. It can be anywhere from a one year certificate program to a Bachelors Degree in Nuclear Medicine with the added possibility of post grad work. The certificate program is typically designed as an adjunct for the individual who is already practicing in medicine and holds a current degree. Whichever route you choose, you will want to make sure The Joint Review Committee on Education Programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology has accredited your program.
California requires a certain number of hours to be completed in twenty basic education subject areas. Prior to selecting your education program, check with the state’s conditional list to make sure the courses you take meet the state requirements. On your application for certification, you will need to indicate how many hours of each subject you have completed.
You will need to list the number of hours you have completed for lab and clinic work also. There are seven areas that require experience in order to qualify for the certification.
Some of the subjects you will be required to take are:
- Chemistry
- Math
- Nuclear Physics
- Radiation Safety
- Radionuclide Therapy
- Nuclear Medicine Technology in vivo and in vitro procedures.
Continuing Education
Your California certificate will be valid for five years. During this time, you will be required to complete a certain amount of continuing education units. In the two years immediately preceding the expiration date of the certificate or permit:
Your continued education and training includes at least five hours of additional approved coursework that you have participated in since the last certificate renewal.
