In this state, students may select from a wide variety of California nursing informatics programs online. Of 11 available California nursing informatics programs, four offer a certificate, seven offer a master‘s degree and one offers a doctorate. California schools located throughout the state offer campus-based education culminating in the Master of Science degree with a Nursing Informatics specialization, one of the most favored routes to a career in nursing informatics. One online Nursing Informatics program available to California students has 12 classes, which total 36 credit hours. Students may be able to transfer up to 18 credit hours of previous graduate study school work to this program and can enroll in the program every month.
From the first year of a graduate degree program in nursing informatics, these students enroll in both advanced nursing classes and computer courses. They also have at least one clinical rotation in informatics. Course subjects might include advanced nursing practice, health care delivery systems and organizations, finance in health care, internet and web-based information systems, information system design, network design and maintenance and teaching.
Most California nursing informatics programs, both online and campus schools offer courses in nursing informatics and other courses of importance such as information technology, database management and medical technology. The evolving field of nursing informatics requires that those in California seeking a career in the field understand every instrument and device that doctors and nurses use and have excellent computer skills.
