California physician assistants will give physical exams, order lab tests, make diagnoses, gather medical histories, interview patients, and can prescribe the needed treatment.  In addition, they will also perform therapeutic procedures like administering immunizations and injections, suturing minor wounds, applying splints and removing of casts.  Some of the routine lab procedures they may be responsible for are, taking cultures, reading skin tests, drawing and examining blood, which ultimately affords the doctor more time to treat patients that require more serious medical attention.

There are many training and educational programs offered by physician assistant schools in California or the physician assistant university in California that are also approved by  the Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association.  Currently there are approximately 18 to 20 committee approved training programs in the state of California.
