While many people associate the practice of sonography with simply viewing a fetus in a womb, this occupation is much more in-depth. Many of California’s sonographers, otherwise known as ultrasound technicians, often use specialized equipment to direct high-frequency sound waves into many parts of the human body, which form images that can be videotaped, photographed, and/or transmitted.
Other duties of the average sonographer may include:
- Making notes about any relevant medical history of the patient.
- Operating sonography equipment.
- Reviewing sonography images and picking the best images to have the physician review.
- Maintaining the records of patients.
- Maintaining equipment and making adjustments to equipment when necessary.
- Explaining sonography procedures to patients.
- Explaining to patients the things that they need to do to help the sonographer to obtain the best images.
- Evaluating sonography-related equipment purchases.
- Preparing the work schedules of associates.
- Managing a diagnostic imaging department.
With specialized ultrasound tech training in California, sonographers can pursue specialty careers in this field. Specialties of sonographers may include ophthalmic sonography, abdominal sonography, neurosonography, and obstetric and gynecologic sonography.
