While the State of Alaska has a number of colleges and universities and community schools accredited by the Commission of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) that offer students the opportunity to achieve healthcare degrees, those who are interested in cardiac sonography training programs in Alaska may need to pursue this education through one of several qualified online and distance learning programs.  Cardiac sonographers typically have a two-year associate degree and many employers prefer a professional credential from a national certifying organization such as the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).

During training, students will learn the clinical skills necessary to perform sonographic examination of the heart using digital ultrasound imaging and archiving equipment.

The first year is usually dedicated to core courses such as sonographic physics and instrumentation, where students learn the principles and theory of using high frequency sound waves to produce ultrasound images of the heart. Students also gain a background in human anatomy and physiology necessary to evaluate the cardiovascular system at various levels. Other studies include medical terminology, cardiac principles, algebra, psychology and other elective courses.

This is followed by a year of specialized instruction, including such courses as a detailed study of various congenital heart defects and various diseases of the heart valves. As part of a clinical practicum students will work in a cardiology department at a hospital such as the Alaska Regional Hospital.
