According to the Nebraska Heart Institute (NHI), over 10 million echocardiograms are performed annually in the United States. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in this country. Cardiovascular disease costs the United States over $83 billion annually in lost work time, medications, and health services. It quickly becomes clear that cardiac sonographer training in Nebraska is in great demand, as well trained and knowledgeable professionals are necessary to run the highly technical equipment that is used in diagnostic cardiac sonography.

Cardiac sonography schools throughout Nebraska and online train students to become echocardiographers. Programs usually last about two years with the end result being an associate degree. Education in cardiac sonography consists of classroom time and practical field experience. In cardiac sonography courses, you will learn the basics of ultrasound technology, principles of physics, cardiac calculations, imaging procedures, echo interpretation, disease states and protocols. During your field internship, you will get the chance to work in a real-world setting using echocardiograph equipment. Your internship will be supervised by trained and qualified echocardiographers already working in the field. After completing your education, you may opt to become certified through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). Although not a requirement to work in Nebraska, the majority of employers of echocardiographers prefer certified, credentialed employees to non-credentialed ones.
