New Mexico joined Oregon in 2009 as one of the first two states to mandate licensure for cardiac sonographers. Those considering enrolling in cardiac training programs should make sure that their school/ department serve as a valid prerequisite for taking examinations through one or both accepted sonography licensing agencies, CCI and ARDMS. Usually this means attending a CAAHEP program, either on campus or online, although someone already in the health field may find they have a shortened path to credentialing.
New Mexico’s prospective sonographers should consider the range of certification options available. Cardiac sonography usually refers to noninvasive imaging, using specialized EKG technologies, while vascular technologists have somewhat broader roles in the cardiac diagnosis field. For those who do want to focus on cardiac sonography, CCL offers the opportunity to specialize in fetal, pediatric, or adult cardiac sonography.
Cardiac sonographer training in New Mexico begins with a solid education -- most often at the associate’s level -- that blends academics with hands on training. Students enrolled in a two year course of study will have 9-12 months of academic study, followed 12 months of supervised clinical practice (a requirement for licensing). Continuing education will also be required to maintain licensing.
