Now that you have decided to make this your career of choice, you can begin by learning about cardiac sonographer training in West Virginia. The first thing to consider is what type of degree you want to achieve; the second is whether you will attend classes online or on-campus.

In West Virginia, you do not need a license to practice cardiac sonography, but you will need at least 2 years of college study, the equivalent of an associate degree in echocardiography studies. Of note, the majority of cardiac sonography schools in West Virginia has online options, so if you feel like campus education may not be the best fit for you, be sure to remember your online options.

During the first year of classes, your focus will be on general education, which is necessary to fulfill all of your degree requirements. However, the next year will be spent learning about cardiac medicine, ultrasound technology, and both invasive and noninvasive methods of echocardiography.

Some of the classes you are likely to be taking during your second year include:

  • Clinical Lab I, II, III, and IV
  • Ultrasound Techniques
  • Advanced Physics and Instrumentation
  • Superficial Structures Techniques
  • Anatomical Structures

In West Virginia, the Department of Health regulates professional healthcare licensure, but they do not have any specific requirements for diagnostic echocardiographers. So, in order to validate yourself as a professional, you will want to obtain certification from an outside agency. You can do this through the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) or the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
