Cardiac sonographer training in Wyoming consists of acquiring either a two or four-year medical imaging focused degree, or attending vocational classes offered by business colleges or hospitals. While accreditation and certification agencies exist for sonographers, state licensing is not required and hospitals as well as other employers rarely require specific certification credentials. Completing accredited courses, however, as well as acquiring certification can help sonography professionals to boost their visibility to potential employers.
Up and coming sonographers may consider completing a program accredited by the Commission for Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAHEEP) - which recognized more than 150 sonography programs in 2008 - or acquiring certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS).
Wyoming's eight public and three private universities offer the medical imaging degree programs necessary to break into the sonography field. Alternatively, students in Wyoming often choose to complete online degree programs offered through colleges and universities across the nation. Distance learning opportunities can both widen a student's program options and provide a more lenient, self-guided learning pace. According to the U.S. Department of Education, more than two-thirds of American universities offer at least some of their degree programs through distance learning.
