How to Become a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) in Colorado

Step 1: Complete a nurse assistant education and training program. The program will be supervised by a qualified professional; likely a registered nurse with at least two years of experience. Furthermore, nurse assistant program must be a minimum of seventy-five clock-hours in length, with at least sixteen hours of education dedicated to practical clinical experience. All Colorado CNA certification programs must be approved by the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies.

Step 2: Contact Pearson Vue and obtain a “Certification by Examination” application. Applicants should be prepared to provide:

  • Social security number, legal name, address, phone number, date of birth
  • Application/examination fee of $105
  • Completed “Original Proof of Training Affidavit” form
  • Completed “Affidavit of Eligibility” form
  • State approved nurse assistant program name, location, and date of completion
  • Personal history information regarding past criminal convictions, substance abuse issues, professional disciplinary actions, mental health conditions
  • Information about any other professional licenses or certifications previously granted in other states, if any
  • Proof of personal identification

Step 3: Once submitted, if application is approved by Pearson Vue, then applicant will be offered an invitation to sit for a competency examination. Examination is two parts: written/oral and skills. A score of 75% or higher is required in order to pass CNA evaluation. Upon successfully passing, Pearson Vue will notify the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, and the CNA will appear on the Colorado nurse aide registry. Certification is valid for a period of two years, at which time a CNA must apply for renewal and pay a renewal fee of $35. Registration will expire every other year on January 30th.
