Colorado Medical Assistant Education
After graduating from high school, it is possible to become a medical assistant (MA) in Colorado in as few as one or two years either online or through a Colorado medical assistant school. Hundreds of programs are offered through medical assistant schools in Colorado. You can also find MA programs online. Whichever route you choose, be sure to find a program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). Graduation from an accredited program is a prerequisite for the national CMA certification exam.
In an accredited program, students can expect to learn about responsibilities in two main categories: medical and administrative. On the medical side, there will be courses about anatomy, physiology, lab techniques, medical terminology, and first aid. The aspiring MA will also learn the basics of patient relations, medical law and ethics, and fundamental skills like administering medication and taking vital signs. On the administrative side, classes will focus on topics such as typing and computer applications, medical record management, insurance processing and coding, and office practices. MA students will also leave the traditional classroom setting to complete a practicum, a college course designed to give the student supervised hands-on practice in a more clinical setting.
Through campus based and online programs, aspiring Medical Assistants in Denver, Colorado Springs, Aurora and Lakewood, Colorado may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including Memorial Hospital Central, Penrose Hospital, and Denver Health Medical Center.
