Home to rolling meadows, mountain lakes, stunning sets of scenery, and cosmopolitan cities, Colorado is an ideal place for Medical Billing Specialists to work, play, and live. Aside from being steps away from some of the best skiing powder and hiking territory in the world, these professionals are gaining from the increased job security caused by the growing senior population and booming medical industry.

How to Become a Medical Billing Specialist in Colorado

  1. Pass a criminal background check. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization (JCAHO) requires all Colorado students assigned to a clinical facility to pass a criminal background check before they begin their certificate or Associate's degree program in medical billing and coding. JCAHO's standards require the community colleges offering a Colorado medical billing certificate to conduct the background check—students cannot conduct their own. Students can be denied entry from a clinical environment if they are in deferred adjudication for or have plead guilty or no contest to selling drugs, are registered sex offenders, or if they have been the perpetrator of a violent crime, sexual act, child abuse, prostitution, indecent exposure, or a similar crime (http://www.arapahoe.edu/departments-and-programs/a-z-offerings/health-careers/background-check).
  1. Get a certificate or Associate's degree in Medical Billing or Medical Coding. Medical Billing Specialists in Colorado must have a certificate or an Associate's degree in medical billing or medical office technology from an online program or Colorado medical billing certificate program in order to perform the basic tasks of their position. An Associate's degree program combines major classes with general education classes, which focus on developing a student's interpersonal, verbal communication, mathematical, and scientific reasoning skills. A certificate program only includes major courses, or courses that pertain directly to the student's desired profession. Aspiring Medical Billing Specialists in Colorado should consider programs that are accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAAHIM) or the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)
  1. Get certified through AHIMA. Colorado does not require its Medical Billing Specialists to hold State certification or licensure, but candidates can always benefit from being certified through AHIMA. AHIMA provides its certificants with continuing education opportunities, access to local professional organizations, and volunteer and leadership opportunities, which can lead to career advancement and higher pay.

Specialists can apply for medical billing and coding certification in Colorado after they finish an AHIMA or CAHIIM-accredited online or campus-based program. AHIMA certification usually includes an application, application fee, and an exam.
