According to the Colorado Midwives Association, it is legal for midwives to practice in just 27 states, and Colorado is counted among these. This organization also says that about one percent of all births in Colorado occur at home under the supervision of a midwife. Midwifery is a challenging and rewarding health profession. Most midwives in Colorado are Registered Midwives (RM), as this classification is the only one who may directly attend a home birth. Colorado requires that its RMs graduate from one of the accredited midwifery education programs approved by the Midwifery Education and Accreditation Council (MEAC). Schools to train RMs are available throughout the United States and online.

Midwifery courses in Colorado must cover the use of oxygen (maternal and newborn), antepartum care, intrapartum care, postpartum care, newborn care, record keeping, and emergency situations. Many education programs for midwifes also include an apprenticeship, in which a midwife in training works with a RM practicing in the state. Following graduation from a midwife training program, one must take an exam in the state to become licensed and registered to practice. Once registered, you may practice as an independent health care professional in Colorado without physician supervision, attending at home births, in birthing clinics and within other facilities.
