Medical Assistant Certification in Connecticut – CT


The occupation of Medical Assisting is not currently a licensed profession. However, different certifications options are available. The most frequently earned is the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential set forth by the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Another certifications offered is the Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), which is regulated by the American Medical Technologists. Specialty certifications for those employed in specialized medical fields such as Ophthalmology or Podiatry are also available. The following outlines the two basic steps you will need to complete to become certified as a Medical Assistant in Connecticut:

    1. Enroll in and graduate from an accredited medical assistant school in Connecticut.
    2. Sit for and pass the national exam.

The administration of the certification test is overseen by The National Board of Medical Examiners and the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).

An applicant is permitted to take the exam up to 3 times in order to obtain CMA (AAMA) certification. Those that are not successful on their third attempt are not eligible for the CMA (AAMA) credential.

Recertification and Continuing Education


After earning the Certified Medical Assistant credential, recertification is required every five years. There are two options for those needing to recertify. The first is to pass the national exam again in order to demonstrate competency in the field. The other option is to acquire continuing education requirements. Certified Medical Assistants need to earn a specified amount of credits within clinical, administrative, and general categories. These credits can be acquired by attending seminars and conferences or taking additional classes.
