A 2009 survey released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics found that the general medical billing and coding salary in Connecticut was $36,350, providing an average hourly pay rate of $17.47. However, years of experience seems to make a big difference when it comes to pay rates as the top 10% of medical coders and billers in Connecticut earn more than $53,370 each year. New graduates, however, should expect to make somewhere between $12.12 and $17.47 as they begin their careers.
Interestingly, the Connecticut State Medical Society conducted a survey which found that just 25.8% of physicians in Connecticut were using electronic medical records, compared with 41.5% of physicians nationally, putting Connecticut physicians drastically behind the timeline laid out by new government regulations. Furthermore, only 25% of hospitals in Connecticut reported basic or comprehensive electronic medical record systems.
Medical coders and billers in Connecticut can expect the future of their careers to change with the new implementation of electronic medical records systems. The professionals who can conquer these new systems will be in highest demand, and will therefore be paid more annually.
Salaries throughout Connecticut for medical billers and coders:
- Danbury: $39,920
- New Haven: $37,800
- Waterbury: $40,890
- Stamford: $32,910
