Registered nurses are truly the backbone of any healthcare practice. This career field continues to grow, with more opportunity developing as our general population ages. Healthcare is predicted to expand exponentially over the next several decades, so the need for qualified and well-trained nurses will reflect that growth.

Educational Programs for Nurses in Connecticut

The requirements for the education of registered nurses in Connecticut are spelled out by state regulation. The three recognized avenues of post-secondary training that adequately prepare nurses for licensure is:

    • Collegiate programs through Connecticut RN schools that lead to associates degrees, bachelor’s degrees, or graduate degrees.
    • Programs conducted or sanctioned by a licensed hospital that lead to a diploma in nursing.
    • External degree programs with nursing education based on both theory and clinical practice and assessment that lead to associate, bachelor, or graduate degrees.

Brick and mortar colleges and universities have already tailored their nursing programs to the state requirements for nursing education. Hospital programs are reviewed on regular basis by the Department of Public Health and given operating approval for a pre-determined period of time. External degree programs are evaluated on a case-by-case basis as nursing students apply for licensure.

Continuing Education Requirements for RN’s in Connecticut

Connecticut does not require continuing education for license renewal. It is recommended, however, that registered nurses seek continuing education experiences on a regular basis to maintain clarity of focus and learn new techniques in an effort to stay current in their field and remain occupationally competitive.

Through campus or online programs, aspiring Registered Nurses in Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven and Stamford, Connecticut may be able to prepare themselves for the possibility of employment in some of the largest hospitals and healthcare facilities in the state including the Bridgeport Hospital, New Haven Hospital, St. Vincent's Medical Center and Danbury Hospital.
