Steps to Become an Ultrasound Technician in Connecticut

  1. Graduate from high school. Connecticut's diagnostic medical sonograpy (ultrasound) programs are only offered through hospitals, which require candidates to have a high school diploma before they enter. Applicants with the best academic records and strongest SAT or ACT scores will be the first to be considered. These applicants should also have gained a solid background in English, physics, communications, mathematics, and human biology.

  1. Become certified in CPR. Any applicant who plans to work in a patient care environment needs to be certified in CPR. CPR training is available is available through local hospitals, community colleges, churches, temples, and American Red Cross chapters. A typical CPR class only takes a few weeks to complete, and cover basic anatomy and symptoms of heart attack, stroke, or choking.
  1. Be in good health and be current with all vaccinations. Future ultrasound technicians in Connecticut should be healthy and physically capable of performing their future duties when they apply for a program. They should also be up-to-date with all their vaccines (hepatitis b, measles, varicella, and tuberculosis), or have written documentation stating that they had varicella.
  1. Obtain an Associate's or Bachelor's degree A typical Connecticut ultrasound technician training program will involve classes in patient care, quality assurance, sonography techniques, and other core competencies. These programs will also provide students with hands-on training, which will strengthen their understanding of main concepts within the field.
  1. Get certified through the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. When candidates successfully complete their certification programs and gain enough clinical hours, they may be eligible to take the ARRT exam. The ARRT exam measures their ability to perform their daily tasks, and it licenses them to practice ultrasound without supervision.
