Find the right school for you
Right now, there are eight LPN programs approved by the Delaware Board of Nursing (DBN). These programs are found in Delaware area technical education institutes, health science institutes, skills centers, community colleges, adult education centers and even technical high schools. Delaware residents should research programs in Newport, Wilmington, Georgetown, Dover, New Castle, and Woodside.
All LPN programs cover coursework in general health care and nursing-specific topics. Among general coursework, students can expect instruction in medical terminology, gerontological care skills, techniques in patient care, rehabilitative care, health care issues, history of nursing, nursing for patients with chronic illnesses, and legal/ethical implications of nursing. More specifically, the DBN state guidelines pertaining to nursing education programs, stipulates that all programs provide instruction on: Body Structures and Functions, Elementary Biology, Pharmacology, Nutrition, Emotional and Mental Health, Human Growth and Development, Medication Administration, Basic Life Support, and Practical Nursing Trends.
Continuing education is another major component for LPNs practicing in Delaware. Although some states do not require CE to maintain licensure, the DBN demands at least 24 hours of CE every two years as a condition of license renewal. All CE must be DBN approved, formally documented, and directly pertain to practical nursing. CE details must accompany renewal application and renewal fee submission. There are many ways that LPNs can acquire CE credits, some DBN suggested activities include: completion of academic courses, authorship of articles or book chapters, in-service learning, independent study, research project involvement, and attendance at professional conferences, presentations, seminars and workshops.
