According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, nursing is one of the fastest growing professions in the United States. Along with a large need for qualified nursing staff there is also a demand for specialized nursing professionals, such as nurse informatics. These professionals have the ability to work in the nursing profession but have a keen perspective with the ability to also work hand-in-hand with IT professionals. Nurses and IT professionals have very different jobs and skill sets and nursing informatics professionals can help the two better communicate and work. Technology will become increasingly important in the healthcare industry as patient records are transferred to electronic systems.  In Delaware, though it is a small state, the need for certified nursing informatics specialists is expected to continue to rise.

In order to earn a Delaware Nursing Informatics Certification you must possess a strong knowledge in both nursing practice and the basics of information technology. There are many paths you can take to be an informatics professional, but in order to be the most effective within a nursing environment it is advised to gain the NCLEX-Nurse Informatics certification. The logical steps to take then include earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s degree in Nurse Informatics.
It is certainly advised as you approach a career such as this that you not only take time to shadow nursing professionals but also to learn as much as you possibly can about information technology pertinent to the healthcare industry.
