Average Salary for a Personal Trainer in Delaware - DE

Educational Requirements for a Personal Trainer in Delaware

Delaware personal training schools offer a choice of degrees that may include a bachelor’s or associate’s degree in a fitness related field like exercise science, physical education, sports medicine or kinesiology. Students attend academic classes as well as participate in applying their knowledge under the watchful eye of a certified personal trainer/teacher.

Areas of academic study may include courses in the following:

  • Nutrition
  • Safe exercise techniques
  • Anatomy
  • Physiology
  • Business management and related concepts
  • Physical fitness theory
  • Training on development of client-specific fitness programs, including proper documentation and monitoring techniques

Those who intend to specialize in a specific area may choose to take additional training courses online or through a personal trainer school in Delaware that is directly related to the specialty of choice. Specialties may include athlete training, rehabilitative therapy training for people who suffer from illnesses or injury, working with children, the elderly or the obese, weight loss training and more.

While only a high school diploma or its equivalent is required to become a certified personal trainer, some employers want more. In fact, if you want to become a professional member of the ACSM, you must have a bachelor, master or doctoral degree in a field related to health, physical education or exercise science. Alternatively, those who have at least a bachelor’s degree in other areas but who currently work in the health field are also eligible. The ACSM also offers an alliance membership that is ideal for students or other people who are interested in health and fitness issues.

ACSM requires that personal trainers are recertified every three years. The recertification fee is $30.00. Personal trainers must complete 45 hours of continuing education classes which are approved by ACSM. Most recertification applicants end up spending a total of $800.00 to $1000.00 for their continuing education classes and the recertification fee
