The College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia (CDSBC) regulates dental assistants working in the province. Students who have graduated from accredited dental assistant schools in British Columbia, or even from non-accredited schools under certain conditions, are eligible to earn certification to practice dental assisting in the province. Currently, eight public colleges and three private colleges offer dental assistant programs at their schools.

Dental assistant schools are accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC). If you attend an accredited dental college in British Columbia, you must pass the written National Dental Assisting Examining Board (NDAEB) examination in order to become certified. If you attend a non-accredited dental college, you must pass the NDAEB written examination and the NDAEB’s Clinical Practice Evaluation (CPE) to become certified to practice in British Columbia. While formal schooling is not required to become a dental assistant, it is mandatory in order to become certified as a dental assistant in British Columbia. Certified dental assistants (CDAs) are highly trained and regulated health professionals. They are usually responsible for performing more skills in the dental office, and can usually find employment much more easily than a non-certified dental assistant. According to the Certified Dental Assistants of British Columbia, CDAs can expect to earn a salary of C$42,000 annually in British Columbia.
