Find the right school for you
Dental assistant school in Ontario is usually found at community colleges or private career colleges. The assisting program, which usually takes ten months to one year to complete, usually has a prerequisite of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma along with 12th grade biology, chemistry and English. Dental assistant schools in Ontario may offer either Level 1, chair-side assisting training, or Level II, intra-oral assisting training.
At this time, only colleges that are accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC) are recommended for dental assistant training by the Ontario Dental Assistant Association (ODAA). These community colleges receive funding from the Ontario government. Formal education for dental assistants is not mandatory in Ontario, as dental assistants are not regulated in the province. However, most employers are slow to hire uneducated dental assistants. Properly trained dental assistants will be prepared to work in private, community, and hospital dental clinics; public health; specialty practices; insurance companies; and dental sales. They can also expect higher salaries and more opportunities for advancement in the field. In addition, as most other provinces regulate dental assistants and mandate a certain level of training, becoming formally educated as a dental assistant opens up job opportunities outside of Ontario.
