Dental specialists serve alongside dentists in the military. Dental services are provided for military members serving all over the world. Dental specialists perform many of the same duties as a dental hygienist or dental assistant including, but not limited to patient care, surgery and procedure assistance, and patient records and administrative tasks. Dental assistants receive on the job training consisting of nine weeks of Basic Training centered around soldiering skills and 30 weeks of Advanced Individual Training focused on dental care tasks. Upon completion, you can serve in the military alongside dentists. Outside of the military the job is most comparable to a civilian dental assistant. If you are interested in continuing your education the GI Bill will possibly cover dental hygienist school. If you consider a job outside the military in the dental field, you may be able to receive the preferential hiring that some civilian companies offer.
