Dental specialists in the military serve alongside dentists and perform a variety of dental services. Dental care is provided for military members and their families. Dental specialists perform many of the same duties as a dental hygienist or dental assistant including patient care, surgery and procedure assistance. In addition they may be required to maintain patient records and administrative tasks. Dental assistants receive on the job training which consists of nine weeks of Basic Training in soldiering skills and 30 weeks of Advanced Individual Training focused on dental care tasks. Upon completion, dental specialists can serve in the military alongside dentists or outside of the military as a civilian dental assistant. Dental hygienist school may be covered by your GI Bill benefit if you consider continuing your education. Some civilian companies offer preferential hiring to military members. A dental auxiliary often receives his or her training in the military.
