Under Canada’s Health Professions Act, each province has its own self-regulating body for dental hygienists working within that province. The College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia is the regulatory agency for all dental hygienists practicing in British Columbia. Those who wish to become licensed dental hygienists in British Columbia must graduate from a dental hygienist program that is approved by the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia There are many approved dental hygienist schools in British Columbia from which students interested in the profession may choose.
While some schools offer diplomas or certificates for dental hygienists, others will offer a bachelor degree in dental hygiene. Schools with certificate programs will take about three years to complete, while a bachelor degree program in dental hygiene takes about four years to complete. Before becoming registered to practice dental hygiene in British Columbia, one must pass the national certification examination given by the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board (NDHCB). After passing the examination, you must become registered with the College of Dental Hygienists of British Columbia before being allowed to practice in British Columbia. Once registered, you may either obtain a job with a dentist or group of dentists or choose to own and operate your own dental hygiene practice, under British Columbia law.
