Dental hygienists must, by Minnesota law, complete a dental hygiene program. Dental hygiene programs typically take two years to complete. Upon completion, students most often earn an associate’s degree. Their comprehensive dental hygiene education will consist of classroom instruction in a variety of dental, science, math and relational courses, clinical and laboratory instruction and hands-on laboratory time. There are a variety of dental hygienist schools in Minnesota.
Minnesota Dental Hygienist Continuing Education Requirements
Dental hygienists in Minnesota are also issued a biennial license. A renewal application must be submitted to the Minnesota Board of Dentistry along with the $100 renewal fee. Additionally, dental hygienists in Minnesota must complete 25 hours of continuing education. Each course must be reported to the board upon completion. A minimum of 15 hours in “core” courses is required as well as two of the following: infection control, record keeping, ethics, patient communications, management medical emergencies, or treatment and diagnosis.
